Capital Area Transit reports a 94% system-wide increase in bicycle riders on CAT buses in 2014. “We’ve seen significant increases in bikes on bus racks over the last year, with growth on just about every route in the system,” Robert Philbin, CAT Director of Planning and spokesperson, said today.
CAT began tracking bike ridership in May 2013 and calendar year comparisons show ridership jumped from 5,975 to 11,608 over the same period last year. About 1,000 bikes ride a CAT bus on average monthly, with peaks in late spring and summer months. Depending on weather conditions, the peak season for bike riders is July through October. Ridership builds in May and tapers off in November to a low in February.
The top five CAT routes for bike riders include: Route 12, Linglestown, Paxtonia, Colonial Park, Progress, Harrisburg (1,919 bikes). Route C, downtown Harrisburg, Capital Complex, Lemoyne, Camp Hill, Hogestown, New Kingstown, Middlesex and Carlisle (1,232 bikes). Route B, Harrisburg, Lemoyne, Camp Hill, Shiremanstown, Mechanicsburg, Health South, Upper Allen Business Park, Rossmoyne (983 bikes). Route 7, downtown Harrisburg, Capital Complex, Riverfront Office Complex Steelton, Highspire, Middletown, Penn State Middletown, Harrisburg International Airport (973 bikes). And Route M, Harrisburg, Capitol Complex, Lemoyne, Camp Hill, Mechanicsburg (784).
CAT also saw a 10% increase in Senior Riders throughout the transit system with more than 1,000 lifetime free senior passes issued in the last half of 2014, Philbin noted.
