Mulberry Street Bridge in Harrisburg Closed Until Further Notice
The Mulberry Street Bridge in the City of Harrisburg will remain closed to all traffic until further notice. The bridge was closed late Thursday afternoon after the ground supporting a parking lot’s retaining wall located adjacent to the east end of the bridge gave way and the wall collapsed. Though it appears that the structural integrity of the bridge remains intact and unaffected, there is concern about the stability of the ground next to the roadway approach to the bridge — especially with the forecast of rain on Friday.
“We had a bridge inspector on the scene this evening for an initial assessment,” said Mike Keiser, PennDOT’s district executive for south central Pennsylvania. “We will have an inspection team back at the bridge on Friday morning to make a more thorough evaluation. We want to make sure that the ground is stable and able to provide the necessary lateral support to the roadway approach to the bridge. A decision to reopen the bridge will be based on that evaluation.”
