CAPITAL REGION WATER CONSIDERS 2017 BUDGETS AND RATES

    cRW

INVESTMENTS IN PUBLIC HEALTH AND SERVICE RELIABILITY REQUIRE RATE INCREASES

HARRISBURG (November 15, 2016) – On Tuesday, November 22nd Capital Region Water’s Board of Directors will consider 2017 Budgets, including necessary adjustments to water and sewer rates at their November Board Meeting.

Under the proposed budgets and rate calculations, sewer rates for 2017 will be set at $6.53 per 1,000 gallons and 2017 drinking water rates will be set at $8.80 per 1,000 gallons with a monthly ‘Ready to Serve’ charge of $6.95 for most customers. For a typical residential customer consuming 4,500 gallons / month, these changes will result in an increase of $7.07 per month – about the cost of lunch at a fast food restaurant – compared to 2016 rates. Under the proposal, Capital Region Water’s rates will continue to be comparable to other utilities in the region.

“Our Board of Directors does not take rate setting lightly, but the water systems that our families, local economy, and environment depend on every day were long ignored,” said Capital Region Water CEO Shannon Williams.

“After years of deferred maintenance and lack of investment in our drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater systems, we continue to make long overdue improvements to our aging infrastructure to prevent the even higher costs of failure. Public health and safety is our highest priority and governs the decisions we make. ”

Capital Region Water is a not-for-profit municipal authority and invests all revenue it receives into operating and improving the Harrisburg area’s water systems.

The 2017 budget represents a significant commitment to addressing decades of deferred infrastructure system maintenance, including $12 million in the drinking water system and $31 million in the combined wastewater and stormwater systems with many of the projects being driven by compliance with regulations. Work includes renewal and replacement of Harrisburg’s aging buried pipes and treatment facilities. The budget also reflects continued progress toward advanced assessment and prioritization of capital projects with a commitment to performing the right work at the right time for the right reason.

Capital Region Water’s recent investments in the Harrisburg area’s water system have been recognized with awards from the Partnership for Safe Drinking Water, Pennsylvania Section of the American Water Works Association, National Association of Clean Water Agencies and the Harrisburg Regional Chamber of Commerce.
