    Gas Division Completes Third Phase Of Downtown Harrisburg Infrastructure Betterment Project; Begins Work on Phase IV

    READING,PA,July 10, 2014 – UGI Utilities – Gas Division is completing work on Phase III of its  multi-year downtown Harrisburg infrastructure betterment initiative this week and will immediately move to the next phase of the project.

    Completion of Phase III of this project and commencement of Phase IV is the latest milestone associated with UGI’s commitment to provide safe and reliable energy service to the Harrisburg community.

    Beginning the week of July 14, UGI will upgrade infrastructure on Walnut Street between North Front Street and North 3rd Street. Work will be performed on Phase IV of the project between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, excluding holidays.

    Commuters are advised that UGI will accommodate traffic on the 100 block of Walnut Street during morning and evening rush hour.

    Previous phases of the infrastructure betterment project upgraded UGI gas mains on portions of North 3rd Street and North 2nd Street, as well as North Street, Liberty Street and Commonwealth Avenue.

    Parking will be restricted on blocks under construction during work hours. Construction may also affect sidewalk access. UGI will provide alternate walkways as needed.

    UGI has been in contact with residents and businesses affected by this project, and is working with are businesses to minimize disruption of their operation. Whenever appropriate, UGI will replace service lines leading to homes and businesses during the main replacement project and, in some cases, will need to gain access to these buildings.

    “UGI recognizes that some residents will be inconvenienced during this ongoing project and will work to complete construction in a timely manner,” Robert P. Krieger, vice president of operations, said. “This project is part of UGI’s continuing commitment to provide safe and reliable natural gas service to our customers and our communities and we appreciate our customers’ and the community’s understanding as we make these long-term system improvements. We also thank the City of Harrisburg for their cooperation and assistance in planning and executing these efforts.”

    This latest phase of the project is part of the Company’s multi-year $1.2 billion infrastructure betterment initiative. UGI’s 2014 infrastructure betterment plan calls for the Companyto spend approximately $85 million to replace an additional 65 miles of cast iron and bare steel mains, in addition to completing a variety of system enhancement projects. The Downtown Harrisburg project will replace cast iron main with high-density plastic and cathodically-protected steel.
