HARRISBURG POLICE CORPORAL ARRESTED FOR THEFT FROM VICE UNIT
HARRISBURG – Sean Cornick, a corporal in the Harrisburg Police Department, was arrested Thursday and charged with theft of money collected from recent undercover operations in the City.
Cornick, 44, was a 19-year veteran with the Harrisburg Police, and had risen to supervisor of the Department’s Vice Unit.
Harrisburg Police Chief Thomas Carter authorized the investigation after a complaint was filed with the Internal Affairs Unit alleging money was missing from police coffers.
“When we uncovered suspicious activity in the vice unit, we immediately launched an investigation,” said Chief Thomas Carter.  “Due to the scope of the investigation, we decided to bring in other agencies to assist and to ensure its independence.”
Several law enforcement agencies participated in the more than six-month investigation, including the Pennsylvania State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
“I thank the Harrisburg Police Department and Chief Carter for taking the lead in this investigation,” said Mayor Eric Papenfuse. “We will not tolerate corruption of any sort in our police department, and we are now looking at ways to strengthen our internal controls to prevent any possibility of theft.”
The Mayor also lauded Harrisburg Police and the command staff for the courage and responsibility they showed to investigate a fellow officer.
“Chief Carter and his team are to be commended for their leadership and service to our City,” the Mayor said.
Cornick joined the Harrisburg Police Department in 1997 and worked in the Uniform Patrol Division before he was assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division in 2005.  Before coming to Harrisburg, he worked in the Berks County Sheriff’s Department.
