HARRISBURG – Mayor Eric Papenfuse and Acting Harrisburg Fire Chief Brian Enterline will announce 13 new recruits for the Harrisburg Fire Department at a press conference at noon Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at the Public Safety Center at Harrisburg Area Community College. The Public Safety Center is located on HACC’s campus at Gate 5 on Industrial Road.
“We are excited to welcome these new recruits to the Fire Department,” Mayor Papenfuse said. “They will now enter an important period of training that will well prepare them for the rigors of serving as Harrisburg firefighters.”
At the press conference the mayor also will announce a new partnership with Pinnacle Health, which has agreed to provide free pre-employment physicals for the cadets. The physicals meet the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) standard 1582 for comprehensive medical evaluations of firefighters.
“We thank Pinnacle Health for its generous donation to serve our city and our firefighters,” Papenfuse said. “It is most appreciated when businesses such as Pinnacle step up to help support the city’s economic recovery.”
The recruits will spend the next 14 weeks at the HACC fire academy with cadets from Altoona and Chambersburg. Recruits undergo physical and mental training to ensure they are well equipped and capable of the strenuous work involved in fighting fires.
At the completion of the academy they will have certifications as an EMT, Firefighter I, Firefighter II, and have nationally recognized status in hazardous materials response.
