HARRISBURG – Mayor Eric Papenfuse expressed shock and outrage at reports of the rape of a 14-year-old girl on her way to school Friday in the 2300 block of Market Street.
“Ensuring the safety of our children is the most important function of society,” the Mayor said. “I am deeply distressed and call upon the school district to work with police to make sure our children are protected.”
The Mayor is conferring with Police Chief Tom Carter to hear recommendations on ways to provide greater protection for Harrisburg children going to and from school. And the Mayor supports the Harrisburg School District’s proposed collaboration with the YWCA of Greater Harrisburg and its Sexual Assault Prevention and Education Program to provide counseling to students.
“We must do everything we can to protect our children and to provide a safe community for their education and growth.”
