May 23, 2014

HARRISBURG – Mayor Eric Papenfuse will lead a special ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday, Memorial Day, at Riverside Park to honor soldiers who have died in service to our country.

The Harrisburg Police Department Honor Guard will participate in the ceremony in which the Mayor will lay a wreath at the World War I monument at N. Front and Cumberland Streets.  Stephenson’s Flower Shops, 4621 Jonestown Rd., Harrisburg, will donate the wreath for the city’s Memorial Day commemoration.

“As we enjoy the holiday weekend, we also should pause and reflect on the great sacrifices that have been made to ensure our freedom and democracy,” Mayor Papenfuse said. “We thank all those who are joining with us in this ceremony to pay tribute to our heroes and heroines.”

City Councilwoman and Veteran Sandra Reid will offer remarks at the event in honor of fallen soldiers and members of the American Legion Post 733 also will participate.

Rabbi Ron Muroff of the Chisuk Emuna Congregation and the Rev. Dr. James D. Jackson, pastor of Goodwin Memorial Baptist Church, will offer prayers for veterans and for our country at the ceremony. Both Rabbi Muroff and Rev. Jackson are members of the Mayor’s Interfaith Advisory Council.
