March 26th Update:  This has been extended for the duration of the disaster emergency.

HARRISBURG – The City of Harrisburg Bureau of Police will extend residential permit parking until April 30th 2020. Please see the statement below for further details.

Dear Parking Permit Holder,

In light of the current situation with the spreading of the coronavirus (COVID-19), the City of Harrisburg is closing its buildings to public foot traffic and working with a reduced workforce, to help prevent the spread of the virus.  This is expected to continue until at least March 30, 2020.

With this being said and the parking permit renewal time upon us, we are extending the expiration date of the current permit parking period. The current permits that are set to expire March 31, 2020, will be extended until April 30, 2020.  This gives all wishing to renew their permits more time to obtain the permit.  With this extra time in place and trying to reduce exposure, we are strongly encouraging permit holders to renew their permits by mail. We will have staff on hand to sort through the mail and complete the mail-in renewals. To do this, you must send your request, along with the required documents as specified below, to:

Parking Enforcement Unit
Residential Permit Parking
123 Walnut Street, 2nd Floor
Harrisburg, PA   17101

The fee for residents renewing their currently held permit is $25.00; new permit applications require a fee of $30.00. Residents who are age 65 or older, and are handicap are exempt from residential permit fees.

With each request, you must enclose a check or money order for the appropriate amount made payable to the CITY TREASURER.  You must also include the following:

  1. If you are an ELECTED OFFICIAL, STATE EMPLOYEE or COLLEGE STUDENT, living in the city on a temporary basis, send a copy of:
  • Your driver’s license
  • Your vehicle registration

NOTE:  If the above documents have a current Harrisburg City address, nothing further is needed.  If it does not have a Harrisburg City address, you must submit a copy of your lease or letter from state government or college personnel office on letterhead confirming your residency status along with a copy of your state employee/college identification card.

  1. If you are a BUSINESS, send a copy of:
  • Your driver’s license
  • Your vehicle registration
  • Your current mercantile license
  • Your lease/deed to property

NOTE:  Please keep in mind you are entitled to ONE parking permit only.

  1. ALL HARRISBURG CITY RESIDENTS will send a copy of:
  • Your driver’s license
  • Your vehicle registration

NOTE:  If your current, eligible Harrisburg City address is not reflected on your driver’s license and/or vehicle registration, you may receive a temporary permit (expires 30 days from issue) with a copy of the above (driver’s license and vehicle registration) and lease/deed at no cost.  After you have updated your driver’s license and vehicle registration through PENNDOT, you may apply for a permanent permit.

Please understand that you will not be issued a permit if you have any OUTSTANDING PARKING TICKETS OR CITATIONS.  Also, anyone who transfers a permit to another individual will be placed on the ineligible list for permits and may be subject to criminal prosecution.
