HARRISBURG – The City of Harrisburg and Mayor Wanda Williams are marking National Bike Month with the inaugural Kids’ Ride with the Mayor bicycle event.

On Saturday, May 13, starting at 11 a.m., all children are invited on to join Mayor Williams on a bike ride through Riverfront Park. The approximately 1 mile loop will begin at the Walnut Street Bridge, turnaround at the Harvey Taylor Bridge at Forster Street, and end back at Walnut Street.

“Riding your bike is good for your health. It increases community engagement. It’s a great reason to get outdoors. And bicycles are a great form of alternative transportation,” said Mayor Williams. “We want to promote bike riding as much as possible, not just in Riverfront Park, but we have such a great trail in the Capital Area Greenbelt as well.”

Light refreshments will be made available.

Recycle Bicycle Harrisburg will be on hand to provide safety information for children and parents. Limited bicycles are available, according to chief mechanical operator Ross Willard, and anyone wishing to borrow a bicycle for the ride are encouraged to email [email protected] ahead of time. Donations to Recycle Bicycle Harrisburg are also encouraged.

Families attending the inaugural Kids’ Ride with the Mayor event are encouraged to park on City Island, and walk across the Walnut Street walking bridge to the starting point of the ride.
