{HARRISBURG} — A new basketball tournament coming this August to the City of Harrisburg will honor the career and legacy of one of the city’s finest public servants.
The 1st Annual Destry “Des” Mangus Classic will take place at the Reservoir Park basketball courts on Saturday, August 10 and Sunday, August 11. The tournament will be 5-on-5, with seven-person rosters. Registration will take place from 10-11:30 a.m. on August 10, followed by an opening ceremony at 11:30 a.m., and tip-off at noon each day.
The tournament will feature three age group brackets: 9-11 years old, 12-16 years old, and 17-24 years old.
Kids ages 6-8 years old will be able to participate in a “skills & drills” session, taught by Mr. Mangus himself.
Basketball is nothing new to Des, who has volunteered in the Harrisburg community for more than 40 years. Specifically, he was integral in the Allison Hill neighborhood during the early 1980’s, through the 1990’s. Des led a local basketball program called UJIMA and the Hard 2 Guard youth development program in 1997, which continue to be mainstays in the Harrisburg community today.
In 2016, the basketball courts at Reservoir Park were dedicated in Mangus’s honor with a mural at center court.
On July 8, Harrisburg City Council designated Reservoir Drive in the city as “Destry E Mangus Way.”
Parking for the 1st Des Mangus Classic will be available for free near the Civil War Museum and next to the Chutes and Ladders playground.
