{HARRISBURG} — The Broad Street Market rebuild is continuing at the site of the fire-torn brick building, as construction workers are starting to demolish and clean the inside.
The City of Harrisburg has hired TLC Construction to complete selective interior demolition of the less-damaged portion of the structure, which was destroyed in a fire July 10, 2023. TLC started work Tuesday, and among their tasks, include removing all remaining shelves and counters, removing all wall coverings to expose the brick, removing any flooring down to the concrete foundation, throwing away any loose debris, taking down any signs; essentially the entire inside of the front portion of the building will be gutted.
All items marked for saving by vendors will be salvaged by construction workers.
Mayor Williams signed an emergency declaration on July 23 to expedite procurement for companies to complete work on the inside of the brick building. Companies interested in performing a number of smaller jobs – interior demolition, carpentry, roofing, and plumbing among them – were asked to reach out to the city to explore the opportunities. From there, the City of Harrisburg was able to hire the following companies to perform the following tasks:
- Selective Demolition Area A (Stone Bldg side) – TLC Construction – $136,400 (of 6 interested companies)
- Selection Demolition Area B (6th St/Totaled side) – VERSAPRO – $91,200 (of 4 interested)
- Framing (carpentry) Area A – CB Construction Services Inc. – $55,856 (only interested)
- Plumbing (taking out pipes, capping lines) Area A – CB Construction – $19,895 (only)
- Lead Windows Abatement Area A – PCS – $35,345 (of 3)
- Shoring (Covering holes, preventing structure collapse) Area B – CB Construction – $52,407 (of 2)
While TLC Construction’s work on selective demolition is underway, other companies hired are expected to begin work as soon as contracts are complete.
In addition, the City, alongside construction manager Alexander Building Construction Inc., is in the process of hiring an architect to lead design and reconstruction efforts. The RFP window for an architect closes at the end of the day Wednesday, August 14, at which point the proposals will be graded by an expert panel consisting of city and ABC Inc. employees. The selected architect will need to be approved by Harrisburg City Council, which is expected to be completed in the fall. Design work will commence, and construction will begin in Spring 2025.
