City of Harrisburg Mayor Wanda R.D. Williams issued this message of peace and community to the Muslim community and the residents of Harrisburg at the start of the holy month of Ramadan.

“My friends: Asalam alaykum and Ramadan Kareem! As we start this holy month, it is my honor and great joy to wish you a Happy Ramadan. This is one of the holiest months on the calendar – a sacred time where Muslims all over the world, and here in Harrisburg, focus on fasting, and then feasting with friends and family. If you are not Muslim, Ramadan gives us the opportunity to support our brothers and sisters by adhering extra closely to the values which guide the Muslim community daily: values like generosity, putting others above yourself, compassion and community service. Frankly, we all should focus on living out these ideals every day. During this Ramadan, may your fasting be safe. May your feasts be plentiful. And may your prayers be plentiful. Ramadan Kareem!”
